As one of the state key universities directly under the Ministry of Education, Tianjin University, growing out of Peiyang University, is the first institution of higher learning in modern Chinese education. Founded on October 2, 1895, our university is famous for its motto of “Seeking truth from facts” and spirit of “Being strict in teaching” among home and abroad.

On October 2, 1995, the School of Precision Instrument & Opto-electronics Engineering of Tianjin University (called School of Precision Instrument for short), is founded on the base of Precision Instrument Engineering Department (founded in 1959). The predecessor of the Department is Precision Mechanism Instruments Specialty founded in 1952.

The School includes four departments (Precision Instrument Engineering Department, Opto-electronics Information Engineering Department, Opto-electronics Science Technology Department and Biomedical Engineering and Scientific Instrument Department) and five specialties (Measuring and Controlling Technology and Instrument, Electronic Science and Technology, Information Engineering, Biomedical Engineering and Opto-electronic Technology Science). The School also possesses a state key laboratory of Precision Measuring Technology and Instruments and a ministry key laboratory of Opto-electronics Information Technical Science. In addition, the School has many research and development centers and institutes, such as Precision Instrument Center, Modern Optics Research Institute, Opto-electronics Research Center, Sensor Engineering Research Institute, Illumination Technology Research Institute, Opto-electronic Measuring and Controlling Technology Research Institute, Laser and Opto-electronics Technology Research Institute, Photobiology Research Institute and Security and Anti-forgery Technology Research Center.

At present, the School of Precision Instrument has 200 teachers, including 60 professors, 58 associate professors, two academicians and 45 doctoral student supervisors. Among these teachers, there are four young experts with outstanding distributions, two persons of the first and second level of Millions of Talent Engineering, five engaged professors with “Changjiang Scholar Award Plan”, two persons of “New-century Scholars”, two teachers with “Haihe Scholar of Tianjin” and eight middle and young-age titled experts of Tianjin Municipality. The School also has dozens of young teachers with doctor degree, as well as teachers who studied abroad and then returned to our country. The School includes six subjects which have authority to award the Degree of Master and PHD: Measuring Technology and Instrument, Optical Engineering, Precision Instrument and Mechanism, Physical Electricity, Opto-electronics Technology and Biomedical Engineering, and two initial state key subjects: Optical Instrument and Measuring Technology and Instrument. Also, there are three state level-1 subjects: Optical Engineering, Instrument Science and Technology and Biomedical Engineering, all of which have been set up postdoctoral research stations. Ministry of Education granted following five subjects to possess engaged professors: Optical Engineering, Measuring Technology and Instrument, Physical Electricity, Precision Instrument and Mechanism and Biomedical Engineering.

The scientific research work of the School has always been active, the School undertakes many key projects funded by State Scientific Technology Overcome, 863 high-tech, State Natural Science Fund, the Scale Plan, International Cooperation and various provinces and ministries. The scientific research funds are nearly ten million RMB and the School gains about 90 awards of State Scientific Progress, State Invention and various provinces and ministries, thus wins many social and economic benefits. The School issues more than 2800 papers in scientific periodicals and conferences within five recent years. All of these scientific researches promote professional abilities of the teachers. Many professors hold concurrent posts in many scientific organizations and enjoy higher reputation among home and abroad.
